Concrete holds up the house pavers, driveways, and keeps fence posts from tipping over. But beyond these utilitarian roles; concrete excels as a decorative material. Adding colour, using special sand or gravel, and varying the surface finish change its look in nearly limitless ways. Decorative concrete is showing up in more and more houses in everything from countertops and fireplace surrounds to tabletops and garden art – a world of possibilities.

Outfitting a kitchen

When decorative concrete began to appear indoors, it showed up first in kitchen worktop. Then came concrete sink, floors and tables. The first time people hear about countertops made from concrete, they tend to raise an eyebrow in scepticism. But seeing some of the possibilities turns them into believers and banishes the notion that concrete always looks as it does on the garage floor.
Concrete worktop range from about 38 mm thick – the standard for most countertops – to 160 mm or more. Some are simple and rectangles. Others incorporate complex geometric shapes and may have special features such as molded-in drain boards. Sinks range from basic boxes to elaborate creations with curves or complex angles. With concrete, almost anything is possible.

Environmental Impact: Cement production and transportation are very energy-intensive, but the impact can be reduced if the aggregate pieces are recycled or locally sourced.

Pros: Heat-resistant; very durable if sealed; shapes, edge details, and texture can be fully customised (i.e. you can add recycled glass or stone pieces into the mixture); can be made to look seamless with a filler.

Cons: MUST be sealed to protect it from stains, water and heat damage, and bacterial growth, but even with sealing moisture or oil can make the countertop look “wet” and sloppy; can be expensive depending on the level of customization required.

Installation: Installation and grinding concrete can generate large quantities of dust, so be sure to take proper health precautions in your home.
